A vapor cone—also called a shock collar or shock egg—forms around jets flying at transonic speeds, typically near the speed of sound (Mach 1). This visual phenomenon occurs when rapid pressure and temperature drops around the aircraft, caused by shock waves and air expansion, cause moisture in humid air to condense into a cone-shaped cloud. It’s a purely visual effect and doesn’t mean the plane has broken the sound barrier. In fact, vapor cones often appear just before reaching Mach 1, especiall
